Thesis W7

My thesis will present the hypothesis that the personal narrative has grown stagnant: it has deteriorated in quality and value as it has proliferated, and as viewer attention spans have decreased. I propose to study how stories build relationships with audiences and how certain qualities can make narratives immersive, with the aim of developing new tools or methods for the creation of user generated content.

Currently, personal narratives take the form of writing (eg: blogs and social media posts), video (eg: youtube) and sound (eg: podcasts). There have also been attempts at combining these in an effort to produce multimedia narratives. Though this may be one solution to creating new modes of expression through personal content, I contend that a deeper analysis of the idea of the story, and how an audience becomes invested in it, can provide insights into the process.
